If life is a voyage, our bodies are our vessels. Every day, we navigate through challenges: little squalls and colossal hurricanes, maneuvering around other boats, parts of our vessels wearing down, a new destination, a change of course.
We cannot control the wind or the waves, nor so many of the other external factors of our lives. What we can do is:
pay attention to shifts around and within us
take good care of our vessels
stay steadfast and calm at the wheel
When we practice yoga, we learn how to do these things on the mat. We cultivate our selective awareness, we move to take care of our bodies, and we get better and better at staying calm through the challenge of postures and meditation.
When we have a regular personal practice, we learn to integrate principles of yoga into our daily lives. We step off our mats and onto our personal ships as the captain of our own lives.
I notice my yoga practice showing up whenever I have the chance to sail on an actual sailboat. I’m better able to focus, stay calm in dicey situations, and enjoy the journey. Where do you notice your yoga practice showing up?
Ear breath, for when you want to steer your self towards a softer, sweeter state. Breathing “through our ears” forces us to relax the jaw and drop unnecessary tension. Practice with me at the top.
